LITERACY

The Northlake Academy literacy program cultivates imaginative, critical, and thoughtful speakers and listeners, readers and writers. Teachers incorporate individual, small-group and all-class lessons in weekly schedules. The emphasis is placed on expression through writing, engaging our students as writers of stories, journals, poems, and narratives...and as scientific reporters.

Students are taught the skills and process of writing, learning to draft, revise, edit and publish their own work. Teachers provide direct instruction and scaffolding of strategies before gradually releasing the responsibility to the students.

Instruction is differentiated to meet the diverse and individual needs of students. Students are given purposeful and authentic tasks involving decision making and problem solving, to view reading and writing as relevant and fun.

Students are given access to quality literature and time to read and write comfortably.
